Ep.88- More than a group contingency
Thursday Aug 24, 2023
Thursday Aug 24, 2023
Welcome to the Behaviorist Book Club podcast! I'm your host, Matt Harrington, and today we're diving into an intriguing article that redefines how we approach behavior change in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
In this episode, we unpack the concept of group contingencies and their influence on ABA service delivery. Imagine trying to measure progress across diverse clients – from those with severe behaviors to those striving for social skills. Enter group contingencies: behavioral relationships shaping how individuals respond to consequences.
We explore independent, dependent, and interdependent operant group contingencies, each impacting behavior differently. But the real game-changer is the metacontingency – think of it as teamwork on steroids. It’s where interlocking behaviors collaboratively drive a shared goal, similar to a sports team clinching a championship through combined effort.
How does this apply to ABA? We tie these ideas to key performance indicators (KPIs), tracking progress and enhancing team dynamics. By manipulating interlocking behavioral contingencies and cultural consequences, you’ll discover a new level of effectiveness in achieving behavior change.
Whether you're a manager or practitioner, this episode offers insights to revolutionize your ABA practice. Tune in to learn how to harness the power of group contingencies and metacontingencies for more impactful behavior change. Thanks for joining the Behaviorist Book Club – where understanding behavior leads to transformative change!

Ep. 87- Antecedent based exercise as an intervention?
Tuesday Aug 22, 2023
Tuesday Aug 22, 2023
Welcome back to another episode of the Behaviorist Book Club podcast. I'm your host, Matt Harrington, and I'm thrilled to have you join us today. In today's episode, we're diving deep into a systematic review that explores the collateral effects of antecedent exercise on stereotypy and other non-stereotypic behaviors exhibited by individuals with autism spectrum disorder. This fascinating study was conducted by Wong in 2022 and provides valuable insights into the world of behavior analysis.
Before we get started, I want to emphasize a couple of important disclaimers that are crucial to understanding the context of this review. First and foremost, stereotypy should not be targeted unless there are severe safety concerns or specific requests from the individual. It's imperative that we prioritize the client's preferences and consent when considering interventions for stereotypy.
Throughout this episode, we'll explore the concept of matched stimulation versus competing stimulation, and how it relates to the effectiveness of antecedent-based exercise. We'll also touch on the intriguing idea of sensory diets and how they might intersect with our understanding of matching sensory needs with exercise preferences.
The systematic review itself presents a compelling range of studies that highlight the positive effects of antecedent-based exercise on reducing stereotypy and enhancing prosocial behaviors. However, as with any research, we must be cautious of publication bias and the need for multidisciplinary collaboration to fully understand the underlying mechanisms at play.
So, if you're ready to dive into the world of behavior analysis, systematic reviews, and the potential benefits of antecedent-based exercise, then let's get started on this insightful journey. As always, feel free to share your thoughts, questions, and feedback in our ABA Cafe Facebook group. Ep. 86- What makes BAP better than JABA?
Thursday Aug 17, 2023
Thursday Aug 17, 2023
🎙️ Welcome to the Behaviorist Book Club Podcast! 📚
Are you a passionate practitioner in the world of behavior analysis, eager to help your clients achieve meaningful and socially significant behavior change? If so, you're in the right place. I'm your host, Matt Harrington, and I'm thrilled to guide you through an engaging journey in our field.
In today's episode, we're delving into the intriguing world of behavior analysis with a focus on a groundbreaking article that has sparked a wealth of discussions. Join me as we explore "15 Years and Counting: The Dissemination Impact of Behavior Analysis in Practice," authored by Critchfield and colleagues, published in 2023.
Now, I must admit, this article isn't an immediate solution to your clinical challenges, but it holds immense value when we consider the underlying purpose of various journals in our field. You see, there's a unique history behind the inception of Behavior Analysis in Practice (BAP), and this article offers a deep dive into the minds of its founders, unraveling the "why" behind this journal's creation.
Let's talk about the journal itself—Behavior Analysis in Practice. Ever wondered why it exists alongside the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis (JABA)? They may seem similar at first glance, but they cater to different audiences. While JABA primarily serves researchers aiming to advance the science, BAP is your go-to for practical, actionable insights aimed at practitioners like you, who are focused on refining methodologies and technologies.
But what sets BAP apart? It's the flexibility it offers. Articles here embrace a more approachable language, stepping away from the strict scientific jargon, while still maintaining rigorous scientific quality. This flexibility ensures that the research is ready to tackle the real-world, messy, and diverse clinical settings we navigate daily. Plus, BAP doesn't just focus on hard skills; it's a goldmine for those essential soft skills, like empathy and compassion, that truly make a difference in building effective relationships with caregivers and clients.
And now, the big question: Is Behavior Analysis in Practice truly reaching its intended audience effectively? How do we measure its impact on practitioners? Enter altmetric data—a fascinating approach that gauges an article's virality and shareability across the vast expanse of the internet. Think of it as a dissemination score that goes beyond traditional citations, capturing the attention and engagement of everyday practitioners.
So, what's the takeaway here? Behavior Analysis in Practice may not have the same impact score as JABA, but it resonates deeply with practitioners, making waves in the real world of behavior analysis. Dive into this episode as we unpack the vital role of BAP in shaping our field, enhancing your clinical skills, and ultimately, making a profound impact on the lives of those you serve.
Before I sign off, a quick favor: If you enjoyed this episode, leave a review and share it with fellow practitioners. Your support goes a long way in boosting the visibility of this podcast and the valuable insights we discuss.
Thank you for joining me on this captivating journey through the Behaviorist Book Club. Until next time, keep exploring, keep learning, and keep making a difference in the lives of your clients.
